Standalone smoke detectors — including the ones in most self-install kits — make noise in an empty house. Ours report to a central station. If a fire starts while you are at work or asleep, an operator dispatches the fire department whether or not anyone hears anything.
Same for carbon monoxide, which you cannot smell and will not wake up from.
This is the part of home protection we take most seriously, because it is the same work we do in buildings where hundreds of people are asleep.

How much does a home security system cost?
It depends on the size of the house and what you want covered. A modest system protecting the entry points is a different number from a whole-house system with cameras and monitored smoke and CO.
We walk the house before quoting, because sensor count is driven by your floor plan rather than by a package tier.
Is there a long-term contract?
We are not a national dealer recovering equipment costs through a thirty-six month agreement. Ask us what the monitoring actually costs and what term applies, and we will tell you before you sign anything.
What happens if I move?
Talk to us before you list the house. Depending on the equipment and where you are moving, the system may transfer to the new owner, or we may be able to install at your new address.
What we will not do is hold you to an agreement for a house you no longer live in without discussing it.
Can you use equipment I already own?
Often, yes. Existing sensors, wiring, and in some cases the panel itself can be reused. We will tell you honestly what is worth keeping.
Where equipment is proprietary to a company that no longer supports it, we will explain what your options actually are rather than replacing everything by default.
Do I have to have monitoring?
No, but a system that only makes noise is a different product. An unmonitored alarm alerts whoever is home; a monitored one alerts an operator who dispatches help whether or not anyone is there.
For monitored smoke and CO in particular, that difference is the entire point.
Can you take over a system another company installed?
Frequently. Takeover usually requires a communicator change and a full walk test so we know every device actually reports.
We will not take over monitoring on a system we have not tested. Believing you are covered when you are not is worse than knowing you are not.
